The Turn of the Screw

Benjamin Britten's 'The Turn of the Screw'

A Frome Festival Event

A Cooper Hall co-production of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw with Frome Festival and Bath Philharmonia.

As 2013 celebrates 100 years since the birth of Benjamin Britten, Cooper Hall will be hosting a performance of what many consider to be his most perfect and musically subtle opera, ‘The Turn of the Screw’, as part of Frome Festival.

Inspired by the location and grounds, Morag felt Selwood Manor offered the ideal backdrop to stage a small scale production of The Turn of the Screw and would be the perfect opera with which to launch The Cooper Hall Emerging Artists Opera Workshop and make her debut as a director. Based on a Henry James novella from 1898, Benjamin Britten’s haunting and sinister opera was composed in 1954.This exciting new venture will provide the opportunity for young professional singers to focus on the process of learning, developing and performing an operatic role.

Working in collaboration with Jason Thornton as Musical Director and Bath Philharmonia, we aim to host an accessible, intimate and engaging performance – an opportunity for both regular opera goers and interested newcomers to experience a professional production at close quarters.

Vocal Training with John Shirley-Quirk

Our young, professional cast have been given the gift of additional vocal coaching, working specifically on text with eminent bass baritone, John Shirley Quirk. John provides the direct line to the original source as Britten wrote pieces especially for him, and he regularly performed with Britten’s life partner, Peter Peers.
