Opera Unbound with Jess Aszodi
17 October 2019 @ 8:00 pm
The human voice is opera’s most basic ingredient. In this concert the vocalist alone will run amok through the vivid wilderness of repertoire for voice alone.
Jessica Aszodi is known for her adventurous performances, and for this show, will take the audience on a rollercoaster through time and timbres. Featuring music by W.A Mozart, Luciano Berio, John Cage, and Kurt Weill, alongside composers of today like Liza Lim, Anthony Pateras and Jennifer Walshe, the program showcases the human voice at its extremes, jumping across time and genres, while breaking down our beliefs about the nature of opera itself.
Jess Aszodi’s career could best be described as genre-bounding and label-defying. The Australian born, London based vocalist has premiered dozens of new pieces, performed work that has lain dormant for centuries, devised pieces, projects and festivals, sung roles from the standard operatic repertoire and collaborated with a constellation of artists from the far reaches of the musical palette. Her performances have been described as “thrilling” (LA Times) and “Intense” (New York Times). Her voice has been praised for its “utmost security and power” (Chicago Tribune) while the media in her native Australia have dubbed her “one of the finest actress-singers in the country” (The Age).
