Cooper Hall heralds the New Year celebrating the power of singing to move, excite and unite.

Cooper Hall relaunches post pandemic with a spectacular event featuring two up and coming stars of the opera world who are currently performing at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera.

Innocent and Chuma will present an all-encompassing, romantic musical programme to include repertoire by Bellini, Bernstein, Bizet, Brahms, Donizetti, Rossini and Verdi. They have also promised an added bonus of a song from their homeland of South Africa.

Chuma Sijeka

South African baritone Chuma Sijeqa is a Jette Parker Young Artist Programme alumnus and Opera for Peace emerging artist. He was born in Phomolong, Johannesburg, and began singing choral music in primary school. He went on to join a community choir while in secondary school, and began solo singing, including opera, after entering the SASCE school competition. He studied in the Vocal Arts Department of Tshwane University of Technology with Pierre du Toit where his roles included Don Magnifico La Cenerentola, title role Falstaff and Don Alfonso Così fan tutte. He went on to join Gauteng Opera in 2017, appearing in a wide range of productions and events, in roles including Gaspar in Donizetti’s Rita and Schaunard La bohème. Sijeqa in 2018 won Second Prize in the Voices of South Africa International Singing Competition, which in the competition he participated in masterclasses with Elaine Kidd and David Gowland of The Royal Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, and with David Cowan of Opera North. As part of his prize he participated in the Les Azuriales Opera Festival in Nice in the same year, and won the Joseph Karaviotis Prize in the vocal competition.

He also joined the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme as a Link Artist. In 2019 he took part in The New Generation Festival where his roles included Don Bartolo Le nozze di Figaro. He then went to further his studies at Guildhall School of Music and completed his artist masters before singing the Father The Prodigal Son by Debussy and Landlord Passion, Poison and Petrification by Bernard Shaw in Pegasus Opera’s double bill (Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House). Next came Harašta The Cunning Little Vixen (Opera Holland Park) He then joined the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme 20th Anniversary Company where he participated in various projects and roles included Ancelotti Tosca, Second Philistine Samson et Dalila and Second Nazarine Salome (ROH main stage).

Chuma is studying the role of Speaker Die Zauberflöte for Welsh National Opera.

Innocent Masuku

Innocent Masuku is a South African operatic tenor who recently graduated from the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He has received various accolades including a Merit award in the 2019 SAMRO competition, a Drake Calleja trust award, sponsorship by The Tillet Trust fund, The Oppenheimer International Scholarship, and The Countess of Munster Musical award.
He is a former studio member of the Cape Town opera where he made his first public performance as Crabman in a production of Porgy and Bess set in Argentina. Other recent roles include Borsa in Rigoletto, Tamino in The Magic Flute and Porgy and Bess. In 2021 he performed the role of Conte Alberto in L’occasione fa il Ladro with British Youth Opera.

Innocent’s upcoming roles at ENO include Leonard Meryll The Yeomen of the Guard, The Spirit of the Masque Gloriana, Remendado Carmen and Gastone The Dead City.

He has performed in master classes led by Maestro Kamal Khan and Willard White and performed alongside Eric Owens.

Innocent was a member of the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus in 2022 and is also a mentee at Pegasus Opera.
